CYL Celebrates 65 Years Of History

2004 marked 65 years of history for the Chinese Youth League. First established on 1 July 1939, CYL is today, one of the oldest Chinese Community Organisations in NSW.

To celebrate this historical event, CYL held it's 65th Anniversary Gala Dinner Dance on Sat 27th November 2004 at Sheraton On The Park.

The night was a huge success and a total sell-out with 38 tables sold. The theme of the night "East Meets West" was chosen to reflect CYL's unique position in this multi-cultural Australia - as a bridge via which the Australian and Chinese Community can learn more about one another. In this way, the two cultures are merged where we can come together to live as one, in "Harmony."

Guests of honour included:

  • Stepan Kerkyasharian AM - Chairman, Community Relations Commission for a Multicultural NSW
  • Consul General QIU Shaofang - Consulate General of the People's Republic of China

It was an action packed night with a host of activities including a performance involving our very own President, Mr Ken Wong. Guests also got to show their groove on the dance floor to the tune of "Emerge" and "Club Havana." Emerge consisted of a popular duo of two sisters, Carly and Shae Brewster who showed everyone a good time! Check them out at www.theedge.net.au. Club Havana comprised of 12 of the best musicians from Cuba, Chile, Argentina and Australia from Sydney's thriving Latin music scene.

Other activities included a half hour auction, raffle draw and lucky door prizes. Prizes up for grabs included Nautica Footwear, a bottle of 1990 Vintage Dom Perignon, Jade Pendants, Return Airfares to Asian Destinations via Qantas, Hotel Packages at the Sheraton and Holiday Packages in Sabah, Malaysia! You had to be in it to win it!

Not to mention the announcement of the Sydney Water Sports Centre in Pyrmont - the future home of dragonboating and a CYL Project. See http://www.swsc.com.au.

Hence, with great food and wine on offer, a host of activities and lots of entertainment, it was definitely a night to remember!!!
